EAST MEETS WEST IN MANILA; THE PHILIPPINE PREVIEW OF THE LONDON & IRELAND GALAS

Ballet Manila’s stages preview of

London Ireland galas 

In June and July 2011, Lisa Macuja Elizalde and Ballet Manila go to London and Ireland to perform "East Meets West", a gala that celebrates and showcases how ballet bridges classical and indigenous cultures.

Manila dance enthusiasts have a chance to watch this world-class production show in a ONE NIGHT ONLY presentation of “East Meets West – The Manila Preview” on June 18, 2011 Saturday 7:30 PM at Star Theatre, Star City Compound, Pasay City.

East Meets West highlights some of Ballet Manila's premiere works including: Arnis, a dance inspired by the Filipino martial art of wielding wooden sticks (arnis); Dulce, a ballroom-to-ballet dance medley portraying the Filipino way of celebrating friendship, courtship and marriage; Sotto Voce, a seductive choreography by Augustus Damian III; Reve, a choreography by Ernest Mandap fusing the music of Metallica and classical ballet in a story of twins trying to find their individuality; Sayao sa Pamlang, a choreography by Agnes Locsin combining the movements of Pangalay, a dance to show the beauty and gracefulness of the hands, Sagayan, a dance to drive away evil spirits, Kzudaratan, a dance to show a manner of walking, and Kuntao, a dance of the martial arts.Also featured in the repertoire are: Agila, a solo mimicking the movements of a soaring eagle; Arachnida,a  modern dance piece about spiders mating; Don Quixote Grande Pas de Deux (the famous wedding pas de deux of Kitri and Basilo from the Russian classic), Le Corsaire Pas de Deux (kidnapped princess Medora dances with Ali, the slave devoted to the pirate Conrad); and the balcony scene from the classic Romeo and Juliet back-to-back with Summer's End, a whimsical pas de deux about a boy and a girl who meet and fall in love one summer day. The show closes with Mga Awit at Sayaw (Songs and Dances), with the full cast dancing to Filipino pop songs with a classic touch.
